A model concert stage, fully animated with smoke, lights, and other special effects is housed within a City of Toronto trash/recycle receptacle. The stage is only visible through the three slots along the front of the container. Several speakers are also housed within the bottom of the receptacle providing an audio soundtrack to the concert within. Smoke, sound, and light emit from the receptacle creating an absurd audio-visual spectacle from the familiarity of the city’s furniture.
This strange and absurd sight animates the overlooked, the noticed but unseen. In doing so these familiar objects take on new meaning in their future sightings. Or at least a new history and place within the minds and memory of those who have encountered this familiar but altogether very abnormal sight.
Visible through the slots along the front of the receptacle is the performerless yet fully animated stage below. Miniature steel trusses and lighting are suspended from the top of the container and hang above the flat black stage onto which smoke billows out rising up and out past the viewer.
