independant rider on the lam
Shopping carts are yet another trace of our being which find their way into so many different environments; on front lawns, in rivers, on top of bus shelters, in ditches, farmer’s fields, sidewalks, alleys - the list goes on. It sometimes seems as through they have a mind of their own, as if they were runaways, sneaking about the city. Independent Rider on the Lam is just that, a shopping cart with a mind of it’s own.
The shopping cart lurks about the space, occasionally moving in short sporadic movements over random intervals, as if sneaking through the dark city streets. A light hanging over the side of a milk crate illuminates the room, casting dramatic shadows from the shopping cart on to the opposing wall. A faint whispering sound in the room carries the traces of urban noises mixed with other subtle and mysterious sounds. A small monitor mounted on the front of the cart plays black and white footage of shopping carts sneaking about the city streets of their own accord.
A somewhat satirical look at the discarded shopping cart, the work twists the way in which we see ourselves and the traces we leave behind in the environment. It is not a political statement on the effects we have on the environments we inhabit, but rather that we do inhabit them and that wherever we go, we create a mark, and an enigmatic story.
